Palmetto Mastersingers
May 21, 2009
On June 23rd, the Palmetto Mastersingers will come ashore via Holland Amercia Cruises for a midday concert at The Guild.
The group of 40 male singers are on a “Tour On The Sea” via the ms Maasdam that departs Montreal June 20th and lands in Boston on June 27th. En route, they will present concerts in Montreal, Charlottetown and Sydney ports-of-call.
Shortly after the ship arrives in Charlottetown, the singers disembark for a noontime concert at The Guild in downtown Charlottetown before they are whisked back to sea that evening. The choral music concert is open to all ages and audience members are welcome to bring their lunch to enjoy during the show.
When asked why the group chose Charlottetown as a port-of-call concert location, Lois Harper of Arts Bureau for the Continents/Congress Travel & Cruises says, “Who wouldn’t want to visit and sing in PEI!! Your province is one of the most charming in Canada.”
The group is under the direction of Walter Cuttino who teaches choral music with an attitude of sheer joy that makes rehearsals - and concerts - a delight. The group publicizes, “He thinks nothing of halting the reading of a difficult piece to share his latest joke, bringing guffaws from the men and a blush to our accompanist.” On this tour, Alison Hilbish accompanies the group.
The Palmetto Mastersingers were organized in 1981 by Dr. Arpad Darazs, then director of choral studies at The University of South Carolina. He saw the wonderful possibilities of a men's chorus to provide an opportunity for men from all walks of life who love to sing together; but, he saw the greater purpose of the rich service such a group could provide too many people enhancing the cultural life of the community.
The men’s choral group have completed over 25 years of performances across North America, Germany, China and Russia.
Concert tickets are $5 for seniors/students, $7 for adults and are available now at The Guild’s Box Office. Doors for this show open at 11:30am on June 23rd, 30 minutes earlier than normal Guild hours of operation.
