Inaugural Play On Words Storytelling Festival Presents Stories, Music and Theatre
February 19, 2010

The first ever Play On Words Storytelling Festival is coming to The Guild on March 12th and 13th.  This two-day festival leads into March break and offers something for the entire family.

The festival celebrates stories through spoken word, music, theatre and multi-media presentations in addition to offering two separate workshops for those wanting to gain skills and confidence in writing and performing ‘their personal story’. Stories may be shared at the evening performance on Saturday .

“We have designed the public events into 3 themes: Fantasy (Friday night); Young Writers (Saturday afternoon) and Island Perspectives (Saturday night)”, says executive director, Cate Proctor, “while also including learning opportunities through workshops for either the budding or more established writer and performer.”

The workshops are presented by award winning Island poet and musician, Tanya Davis. The public is required to pre-register for these workshops which will be held Saturday afternoon at 12:30 (writing) and 3:30 (performance) at The Guild. Workshops are $10 each and registration is for a maximum of 15 persons per class.

The Fantasy theme night expresses the creativity and imagination that come with storytelling and includes Tyler Carmody & guests presenting storied Rap Music; ‘The! Prophet of Flatland’, a fictional spoken word presentation by Steve Chaisson; and Storybook by Tanya Davis, Leslie Menagh & the Noise Choir - a theatrical, multimedia artwork of stories.

Young Writers on Saturday afternoon will present a variety of spoken word stories written by young and not-so-young writers with the youthful audience in mind. Presenters include two Grade 6 students.  Joshua Scott narrates a story about a young man in the war of 1812  and Sam Alan tells the stories of nature.  Professional writer Ian Stretch reads stories that entice the curious mind.

The Saturday evening presentation, Island Perspectives, weaves true stories about Prince Edward Island residents from spoken word to musical theatre. A group of community writers calling themselves “Life Writing Group” are presenting their own stories about 1961 Great Snow as well as stories entitled Grandmother’s Apron and the Registered Nurse on PEI.

Closing out the festival is a new piece of musical theatre entitled The Big Red Radio Show that relives the era of Island radio with such notables as Loman MacAulay, JP Gaudet and other memorable (real life) characters and antics.

Emcee for the festival is well known Island storyteller and media personality, Eric MacEwen, who will have the task of bridging the many presentations with his own skillful and entertaining linguistic talent.

For more information on the festival, to pre-register for workshops or to purchase either individual tickets or weekend passes, contact The Guild’s box office at 620-3333.  Tickets range from $5-20 with weekend passes available for $32.

Please note that evening shows begin at 7:30 pm with theatre doors opening at 7pm for general seating. A full list of all shows, workshops and their scheduled times will be available at The Guild’s website the week of February 15th.

The Guild gratefully acknowledges the funding support from the Department of Canadian Heritage, specifically the Building Communities Through Arts & Heritage program for this festival.

I had myself a great time and it was a great experience. I wish I could have met everyone before the show because during the attendance was so great that I never then found the time to do so. That is a great event. - David Olivier, Photographer, Arts Mixer Exhibitor Jan 09
