Friday Fantasy Theme at Play On Words Storytelling Festival March 12
February 22, 2010
Charlottetown – The inaugural Play On Words Storytelling Festival kicks off on Friday, March 12 at The Guild with Fantasy-themed stories highlighted through rap music, spoken word and a multi-media presentation. The evening’s stories are connected by renowned radio personality and festival emcee, Eric MacEwen.
The opening production of the festival is The Island Is A World, The Word Is An Eyeland. This tells a story about a man created by a sorcerer apprentice who then uses the lives he has created to connect him to human emotions and addictions while, at the same time, cursing the human. The main character must overcome the sorcerer’s tribulations to find love.
This story is presented by Tyler Carmody and DJ Ghost through specific rap-genre songs highlighted from their recent CD entitled The Island Is A World, The Word Is An Eyeland.
The focus then diverts to spoken word and Steve Chaisson, author of the book The! Prophet of Flatland. He reads the first chapter of a story that is based on a fantasy world of near-future where geopolitical forces have turned the social order into an Orwellian nightmare. This chapter introduces Steven Neuron, a man tormented by events from his past that he cannot forget and has never understood.
The evening closes with Story Book, an entrancing, multi-disciplinary journey into the fantastical tales presented by Island writer/poet/musician, Tanya Davis. Story book, in its essence, presents the very act of storytelling. The stories explore mature and universal themes such as dying with celebration and dignity, accepting tears as a form of expression and accepting art as a path worth following.
The stories are illuminated by three Maritime illustrators while a small ‘noise choir’ contribute special effects, thus creating an atmosphere of ‘storytime’; an artwork that is a must see. Story Book is co-conceived and directed by Leslie Menagh.
Eric MacEwen brings his own brand of storytelling flair to the festival. He is known internationally for his own poetic rhymes and stories as presented through his syndicated radio show, The Eric MacEwen Show, broadcast throughout the Maritimes. He is a lover of stories and, coming from the Island where stories are told ‘round kitchen tables, he very much appreciates the tradition of storytelling.
